TARGET Outreach

TARGET Outreach is designed as an introduction to The First Tee Life Skills ExperienceTM. The program was developed to introduce young people to golf in a safe environment that promotes curiosity about the game while integrating essential links between golf and life skills seamlessly. It utilizes SNAG equipment and other modified equipment to provide young, inexperienced golfers with a safe learning environment. These early, positive experiences are designed to help young people develop an immediate interest in opportunities available at The First Tee, as well as a life-long interest in the game of golf.

TARGET serves as a great tool to take the program to youth at schools – during school hours or after school at school programs, to youth service agencies such as Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCAs, and to city and county parks. The First Tee of Los Angeles delivers TARGET Outreach programs year-round giving thousands of young people an exposure to golf and life skills activities at a minimal cost.  Depending on the number of participants, TARGET Outreach activities may last an hour or a whole day, for anywhere from 10 to over 1,000 students.  TARGET is built around six components and delivered by The First Tee of Los Angeles’ professional instructors and mentors.

Components of the TARGET curriculum are:

  • Take Aim – emphasizes that golf is a targeted-oriented game;
  • Anyone Can Play – highlights the diversity of the people who play the game, the very environments where it is played and techniques used to play the game;
  • Respect – guides participants through games that emphasize respect for themselves, others, rules of the game and the environment;
  • Golf is a Game – emphasize developing decision-making and golf-related skills as well as learning to identify and overcome challenges;
  • Enjoy Yourself – reinforces having a positive attitude; and
  • Try It.
