Basic Instruction

WHO: Anyone between the ages of 7 and 17 is eligible to apply.

WHERE: The program contracts with 16 different facilities throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties and conducts its programs at those facilities. (link on 16 different facilities to that page)

WHEN: Classes are taught in the late afternoon (generally after 4:00PM) Monday through Thursday. Classes meet once a week.
Participants progress through five different levels of the Urban Youth Golf Program. The five levels are:

New Golfer: Everyone who is accepted into the Urban Youth Golf Program must go through the 10 week New Golfer series. Classes last for 1 and a half hours and provide a basic introduction to the game, focusing on safety, etiquette, and some skills. Students who attend a minimum 80% of the New Golfer Series graduate to the Junior Level.

Junior Level:
Junior Level classes again focus on safety and etiquette, and more attention is given to the development of skills. Classes are 1 and a half hours in length and are taught in 6 week series. Junior Level golfers are eligible for the Intro to Competition Series.

Amateur Level: Amateur Level golfers are able to play the golf course without adult supervision. They are required to join the Yippee Skippy Golf Club and begin the process of developing a handicap index. Classes focus on rules and skills development, and are taught in six week series. Some Amateur Level golfers may be eligible for Team Play.

Mini Tour Level: Mini Tour Level golfers has an established Yippee Skippy handicap index of 25 or less. Special clinics are scheduled throughout the year for these players and are conducted by well known teachers or Tour Players. Regular instruction is not available. Mini Tour Players compete in Team Play.

Tour Level: Same as Mini Tour but players have an established Yippee Skippy Handicap index of 12 or less.

In addition to the skills, rules, and etiquette knowledge participants need to progress in the program, they are required to earn points through volunteering.

Students progress is measured through our nationally recognized program called Steps to Success. Each student must complete a number tasks at each level before graduating to the next level.

SFC: Safe, Fast, and Courteous

Every junior who applies and is accepted into the Urban Youth Golf Program starts at the beginning: The New Golfer Series. Some progress quicker than others, of course, but everyone starts at the same place. The goal of the program is to make all of our golfers Safe, Fast and Courteous (SFC) when they are out on the course.
