Founded in October 1998, the Yippee Skippy Golf Club was
the first golf club established in California for juniors.
The Public Links Golf Association (PLGA) of Southern California
helped the Urban Youth Golf Program establish the club
for participants who have reached the Amateur Level of
the program.
Chuck
Hogan, golf guru, instructor to more than 100 PGA and LPGA Tour
Pros, and all around good guy, is the originator of the Yippee
Skippy Concept. Chuck not only wrote the Instructor's Manual
for the Urban Youth Golf Program, but oversees the training each
of our instructors goes through before they are able to teach
for the program.
Chuck begins each of his seminars by asking his audience to stand
up, wave their
arms up and down, say "wapa wapa wapa," and then jump in the air and
yell "Yippee Skippy!" Generally, half the crowd will do it and half
won't. Chuck believes those who refuse to do the exercise do so because they
are afraid of what others might think of them. He says the same is true in golf.
For instance, why do adults sweat over a two foot putt? "Because they are
afraid of how they might look should they miss what is normally an easy shot," Chuck
says. Most people wind up playing golf from a standpoint of fear, a fear of what
others might think if they look silly. There?s an old saying on the golf course: "It?s
not how you play, it?s how you look." Unfortunately, too many people take
this literally! Yippee Skippy is all about keeping golf fun and playing without
fear.
So next time you're on the green staring down that short putt, think
Yippee Skippy and knock it in. No sweat.
